November 11, 2006

12:15 p.m.-- Blake is now in ICU Room 77 and will likely be there several days. He is talking and, actually, is very funny! Doctors say he's still 'critical' and the next couple of days they're monitoring closely for all his organs to 'wake up and function properly'. Please send him your best wishes through this blog and we'll be updating it frequently with news of his recovery.
Praising God for his healing of our baby,
B.R., Helen, and Jeff

Dear Blake (and Jeff),
You don't know me but I feel like you should be my nephews or cousins or somebody you look forward to keeping up with because everytime we Regional Director types get together we have this BIG OLE guy from Winnfield give us a report on "my sons". When he speaks of you he always has the biggest glowing smile on his face. So you have to get very well, very soon so we can see the big guy smile REALLY big. We are praying and praying and praying and know that God has you in His care. Just keep looking up to where all those prayers are going....and being answered.

It is great news to hear you are in a room and doing better. You and your family have been added to our prayer list at my church. I am praying for you every day and I know the Good Lord still has plans for you. Keep fighting to get better so your mom can bring you to Winnfield and see to it that you get back to your "old self". Let her "pamper" you...that's what moms do best!!! Hope to see you soon.

Hello Blake from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. We were sure glad to get the good report from BR and Helen today when we talked to them. You have sure been the focus of our prayers these past days and we will continue to lift you up before our Great and Mighty Lord and Savior in the days ahead.

Our church and other churches here in Virginia as well as our friends here are praying for your quick recovery. In addition we have been in contact with many of our Pastor and Missionary friends all across the country and as far away as Russia to ask them to pray for you.

Scott and Corey both have been in contact with me everyday so they could keep updated on your condition and send their love and prayers for you.

Blake, you just continue to put up the good fight and lean on The Lord's strong and sheltering arm for your strength.

All our love and prayers...
Uncle Lee and Aunt Paula

11:30 a.m.-- BLAKE UPDATE
We're coming up on the 48 hour mark. Blake is, of course, still in ICU considered 'critical'. He is currently having difficulty maintaining O2 level and is forced to use an oxygen mask which he finds claustrophobic...we're hoping he won't have to be put back on the ventilator. His body is full of fluid which tubes are working at draining. He's begging for Gatorade..but, NGT (gastric tube) will not be removed for a few days. Latest word from doctors is..."with best, optimal recovery signs he'll be here another couple of weeks...set-backs of any kind will extend that time-frame". He had fever 101.2 last night but is clear at present. He has also shown that he is full of vinegar-- had a serious conflict with last night's nurse and charge nurse had to assign someone else to him (we believe he was right, she was wrong). All told...when the surgical team doctors remark that they are 'amazed' that he is doing so well, we know for certain the power of prayer! We'll keep you posted.

Hi Blake, I am a member of your Uncle Lee's site, "Just Friends.". Have been keeping up with you and your progress. Let me tell you that my sister-in-law had the same thing happen to her about 20 years ago. She too was on a ventilator and in ICU for almost two weeks at the Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, NC. Her condition appears identical to yours and she is doing great today. Was a long tough road but the Lord was with her. I will keep you in my prayers until I hear you are out of the woods. Sounds like you are getting better since you are giving the nurses a hard time. LOL. God Bless you and your family.

Hello all...

Because of fluid in his lungs, doctors have just put Blake back on the ventilator (about 7:30 p.m.). He was totally exhausted from labored, shallow breathing and just trying to keep his Oxygen level above 90 (which it wasn't very often). He is now limited to one visitor (Mom, Dad, Jeff or girlfriend) at a time. To afford him an opportunity to truly rest he is under anesthesia (semi-coma). Doctors are also hitting him with diruetics to flush the fluid out. Kidneys appear to be functioning fine. This is our primary concern at this time...breathing problems and risk of pneumonia on top of everything else.

Please join us in praying that this aggressive approach will result in better, easier days to come.

Our family is staying at Brent House hotel which is attached to Ochsner. There is a laundry, beauty & barber shops, cafes, cafeterias, coffee shop. So...we have all the creature comforts..just keep the spiritual comforts flowing.

The future? Doctors told us yesterday that with the 'best scenario' (optimum progress) we can expect to be at Ochsner ~ 2 more weeks. "Any set-backs will lengthen that time-frame." Soooo..looks like we'll spend Thanksgiving in N.O....just hope we'll be back home by Christmas. Blake will return to Winnfield with us so that I can feed him, rub his back and feet with lotion, and do whatever is needed to restore him to good health.

The address here is:

Ochsner Hospital
1514 Jefferson Highway
New Orleans, LA 70121

This is truly the hardest thing I've ever had to cope with.

I love you,
Helen

Paula and I are praying that the pneumonia will be prevented and that Blake will soon be off the ventilator and heading toward full recovery. You all are in our constant prayers during very difficult time for Blake as well for you, B. R. and Jeff.
We Love you
Lee and Paula

Here are some verses that I draw strength from and hope they will be of comfort to all of you.

"I will love thee, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised:Psalms 18:1-3

Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.
For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name. Ps 61:1-5

UPDATE ON BLAKE

Blake's body is in raging sepsis...all vital organs are functioning well with exception of the lungs which have taken the major shock (ARDS). For that reason he was put back on ventilator last night and is under anesthesia for semi-coma resting. He is such a little fighter! He's also restrained because he has wanted to rip cords, tubes, etc. out. Team physicians just left us this minute...they expected this condition earlier than now..."We're still hopeful. We're at the point now that you will not notice any measurable improvement day to day...we're talking about improvements measured week-to-week." Soooo..now, we understand that he'll be in ICU for many more days before he can be moved to the floor. Then there's physical therapy, etc. to come. Maybe we'll be able to get him home for Christmas?!?

Our physical needs are being met...but, please keep the spiritual comforts flowing. We're definitely in for a long, long haul.

Bomber!!

So, I'm reading through all the latest happenings, and let me start bay saying that I'm sorry you're in this situation.
But, I've gotta tell you my old "rock out" friend, some of this sounds like the same ole Bomber to me.
Slight recap: I read that you were full of "fluid" and vinegar...And, after reading that you had a conflict with your nurse and had to be restrained so you wouldn't rip out chords and such, I couldn't help but think of the old saying: "he's full of 'fluid' and vinegar". Or something like that. So, you see? Same ole Blake!
And, of course, the nurse was wrong! Just like it was Spencer's idea to prank call someone at 4AM one morning when all of us hoodlums were together. You had nothing to do with that. That's why you were such the good boy and when we were asked "who did it?" you were quick to answer with "Spencer!". Good ole Blake.
aka Bomber.
aka lead man in 99 Octane and creator of "Marcy Playground vs Pantera".
Hands down the best instigator in our group.

And, I know you're probably beyond miserable with all this mess, but look at it this way: when you get through and get to come home, your mom has committed--and we have all seen it so she can't deny it--to cooking your food and rubbing your feet. So, your future is looking bright, my man!
I can't imagine someone rubbing my feet....they might get an inadvertent kick to the face.

Take care the best you can, bro. If you need something, let somebody know. We're all here for you and yours.
And, above all, just do what you can do when you can do it.

Further on up the road,

Josh

4:00 UPDATE-- 11/14/06

Finally, a little bit of encouraging news. Blood culture sensitivity test has isolated one bacterium and doctors began an aggressive antibiotic protocol before 4:00 a.m. this morning. White blood count (infection) is coming down and kidneys are, once again, working very well...but, he presently has 103 temp and they've just done another blood culture, urine and sputum culture. They're discussing the possibility of yet another strain of bacteria.

Yesterday was a really tough day-- kidney function was of grave concern. We're still battling ARDS (Adult Respiratory Disorder) due to the sepsis. Blake was re-intubated around noon today after 'coughing and expelling' the vent x3. He is again in a drug-induced coma so that he can be totally rested. The little while he was without the respirator (about 3-4 hours) his breathing again became very labored and shallow and he wasn't getting enough O2. Sooo..we've gained a couple of inches and may be backing up one!

Blake,

You are on the hearts and minds of so many people. Continue to draw strength from their prayers. You are not alone in this temporary life situation. The people you have impacted and touched are now rallying in support of you. The encouraging words, prayers, and visitations only underscore what a special person you truly are. You keep fighting and stay strong because in the end you will have a wonderful life story for others to draw strength from. The nurses and doctors are stunned with your strength and determination. Yet, the nurses and doctors are not aware of the prayer support and love that so many have for you. In addition, they are not aware of the Winnfield football motto, "We can we will"; however, you have personalized that motto during this most difficult time: "I can I will!" I look forward to hearing your colorful commentary and stories about life and just being in your presence. Hurry up and get better because we are missing too many Saints games. Just think when you get out we can enjoy the games without wearing those trash bags over our heads. Your my best friend and now my new role model for never letting life get the best of you. I love you more than words and life.

DAY 17-- HOSPITAL
DAY 6--ICU

9:45 a.m....B.R. and I have looked in on Blake just now. He is resting 'peacefully' but gets really upset and agitated when he 'comes up' from the sedation. We've been asked not to touch nor talk to him to avoid any stimulation. He needs to reserve all his energies for healing.

Unfortunately, with yesterday's mishaps with the respirator tubing (re-inserted x3) there was some lung damage and collapse. Doctors say this set us back a couple of days.

Otherwise, antibiotic is working for the infection...kidneys are filtering 'great'...blood pressure is on the low side but 'adequate'. It's such a balancing act with his overall problems. We have a great deal of confidence and respect for the entire sets of teams who have been so attentive...the 7-man surgical team is phenomenal!

We're praying for a better day today. Will post again soon.

Blake, Dad and I love you more than you can measure, deeper than the sea. We are anxious to have you back at home with us for your recuperation.

Mom (Blake's)

Blake, it was so good to see you today, even though you were sleeping and resting peacefully while I was there. That's what your body needs now so that it can heal properly and quickly. The doctors say that you are doing great! They are beginning to see the Blake that we all know and love--one who will not let anyone or anything get the best of him. Nurse Mary got a taste of that the other night, huh?! That's okay, keep them on their toes and make them give you the best care possible. God is truly answering all our prayers. He may not work as quickly as we wish He would, but know that He has blanketed you with all His love and healing power. And you WILL come home soon. Wally is missing you! He came in the house looking for you the other day and had a grand time in the dining room !!!(Ask you Mom)

Helen, B.R., and Jeff--I really enjoyed our visit today. You are handling this tremendously difficult situation so well. It is obvious that you have put this in the Lord's hands and are allowing him to take care of Blake. You are role models for all of us. I know that you feel the love that so many people have for your family. Hope to see you again, soon.

Praying for you daily,

Please give a special hug to your mom for me. She was the number one most sincerely concerned person when Tambry was so ill in May before her graduation from LSU. I just know that she is the one holding everyone together through all of this. Keep fighting, get well, and know that so many people care and love you. Just skimming the comments left by others is a witness of the regard that others have for your family and you. Remember 98 Octane? Blake, (The Bomber,The Blakester)
The last seveenteen days have been the hardest I have ever experienced. I have gone through and experienced a lot of thing in my life time, but nothing can compare to the heartbreaking struggle I have seen you fighting through. For years I have thought that I knew what being tough was, but you are teaching me a new meaning of what tough really is. I am so proud of your fighing sprit.

The fact that I cannot take your hurt and pain, physically makes my heart ache to the deepest parts of my soul.

My strenght through all of this has and will come throught the shelter and loving arms of my LORD and Savior Jesus Christ.

You may not be aware of it at this time but the same GOD that is sustaining me is holding you in his loving arms.

To GOD be the glory for all he has done and will continue to do.

BLAKE UPDATE

DAY 18—HOSPITAL
DAY 7— in ICU

Orders to estubate (remove the ventilator) this morning were scrapped because Blake’s lungs are still just too weak to sustain proper O2 level. Unfortunately, his blood pressure has been running quite low, too, (as low
as 86/29) so they’ve had to adjust his ‘sedation level’.

It has been a pretty miserable day for him. He is just aware enough to be highly agitated by any stimulation—talking, bells going off, etc. We’re still having to limit the visitation. He’s also in isolation since the ‘infectious
control department’ alerted the unit to enforce gowns, masks, and gloves in his room (due to the VRE infection). No results yet on any of the cultures they did yesterday.

We are soooo… appreciative of your prayers and support of our family. Blake will be blown away by the blog! We can’t wait for him to ‘come around’ so that he can
see it. We do know he’ll be in the hospital for several weeks to come.

Thank you all for caring….
Blake’s Mom

Uncle B.R., Aunt Helen, Jeff and Blake,

I would like to say, first of all, that you are all still at the forefront of our prayers and the LORD has been faithful to keep you there. The lives that we live today are always so "hurry up" that so many times we have every intention of following through with our commitment to pray for someone, and yet those commitments slip by undone, lost in the seemingly neverending demands from others for our time and attention. I want you to know that one of the things that our LORD is using this situation for is to help me to see that for a child of GOD persistence in our prayer lives is NOT left up to our discretion. Our Great GOD has given us the opportunity to have an intimate part in each others's lives by bearing one another's burdens and we (our family and all those with posted comments here) are privileged and honored that you have asked us to join you in asking The Heavenly Father to intevene on Blake's behalf. I thank the LORD for you Uncle B.R. and Aunt Helen, remebering the times when you included two little nephews from Ruston in your lives and in your family. I also thank HIM for an oppotunity give back to you through prayer and encouragement. We love you all!

We're hoping that it's just an 'on hold' day rather than another set-back

Sister, John, and I are planning on visiting this weekend! Mom (who you nicknamed Lydia) wanted to send a goodie bag full of grilled cheeses and snacks but, I didn't think I could sneak them pass your ICU nurse. So we are bringing balloons instead, I know they will not smell or taste as good as Lydia's famous grilled cheeses...but its the thought that counts.

Be strong buddy and we will be by soon to see you!

P.S. Maybe all of this will inspire you to write a few more great songs. I'll never forget how much fun we had at my wedding reception when you and Knotts rocked out on stage!

BLAKE UPDATE
5:00 P.M. Friday, Nov. 17

Blake has been comatose today (drug-induced) and there's been a lot of activity...bronchoscope ("we removed a small amount of mucous") early this a.m...chest x-ray...CT scan of chest, abdomen, pelvis (with double contrast) which showed 2 liters of fluid in his left long and a large amount in the pelvis. Surgeon just finished inserting a drain to the lung and you wouldn't believe the fluid already!...no wonder he's been unable to breath. They've just transported him downstairs so the radiologist can insert a drain in the pelvis (I think that'll make 11 tubes). Because H/H has dropped more since last Friday's surgery, they've given him another unit of blood this afternoon. What a roller-coaster this has been!

We look forward to being able to touch Blake, carry on a conversation with him, and just bring him a cup of coffee. He wrote me a note last night "I want to eat."

Those who know me know I don't like to cook...but, I'm actually making a list of the things he loves to eat so I can cook for Blake.

BLAKE UPDATE 11/18/06 10:50 P.M.

DAY 20-- IN HOSPITAL
DAY 9-- IN ICU

Blake's surgeon was optimistic this morning. He said that he is 'making great improvement' and they are considering taking him off the respirator...but he wouldn't give us a time-line. We're hoping that when we see him in the morning at 9:00 he'll be off the vent and able to do some talking.

Also, doctor reports that Wednesday's blood culture grew out 'staff'...they don't seem nearly as concerned about this new development as I am. Fever tonight was 101.4. Started feeding him through the feeding tube this afternoon...no nourishment in 5 days due to his very critical condition.

He seemed delighted to see Jennifer, Trent, Whitney, and Boudreaux today. It was a busy day for Blake.

More later,

Laure Derr said...

Dear Blake, Jeff, Helen and BR,
I just want you all to know that the Derrs are continuing to pray for you. We even have the Spatafora's praying too. My mother reminded me of the prayer that we sent out to all the Spatafora's (75 families) when my dad was so sick. Daddy got well after three months in the hospital. The doctors called it a miracle--we know it was the power of prayer. The prayer is called the "Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus". You are supposed to say the prayer for nine days, but we prayed it everyday until Daddy came home. I have been saying this prayer for Blake but if everyone who checks this blog would say this prayer for Blake how wonderful that would be. The prayer goes like this:
O MY JESUS, YOU HAVE SAID: "TRULY I SAY TO YOU, ASK AND IT WILL BE GIVEN TO YOU, SEEK AND YOU WILL FIND, KNOCK AND IT WILL BE OPENED TO YOU." BEHOLD I KNOCK, I SEEK, AND I ASK FOR THE GRACE OF HEALING FOR BLAKE. SACRED HEART OF JESUS , I PLACE ALL MY TRUST IN YOU.
O MY JESUS, YOU HAVE SAID : "TRULY I SAY TO YOU, IF YOU ASK ANYTHING OF THE FATHER IN MY NAME, HE WILL GIVE IT TO YOU." BEHOLD, IN YOUR NAME , I ASK THE FATHER FOR THE GRACE OF HEALING FOR BLAKE.
SACRED HEART OF JESUS, I PLACE ALL MY TRUST IN YOU.
O MY JESUS, YOU HAVE SAID, "TRULY I SAY TO YOU, HEAVEN AND EARTH SHALL PASS AWAY, BUT MY WORDS WILL NOT PASS AWAY." ENCOURAGED BY YOUR INFALLIBLE WORDS, I NOW ASK FOR THE GRACE OF HEALING FOR BLAKE. SACRED HEART OF JESUS I PLACE ALL MY TRUST IN YOU.
LET US PRAY--
OH SACRED HEART OF JESUS, FOR WHOM IT IS IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO HAVE COMPASSION ON THE AFFLICTED, HAVE PITY ON US MISERABLE SINNERS AND GRANT US THE GRACE WHICH WE ASK OF YOU.
AMEN

I hope that everyone will join together and pray this prayer for Blake. May God bless.
Love, Mama Derr

BLAKE UPDATE 11/19/06 11:15 A.M.

DAY 21-- IN HOSPITAL
DAY 10-- IN ICU

WOW!! We arrived for the 9:00 a.m. visitation and found that Blake was taken off the respirator about 6:00 a.m. His wonderful nurse, Stacy, was 'finishing his clean-up'. She had given him a good bath, rubbed him with lotion, AND SHAVED HIM (it took 2 razors). He looks much more like himself. His arterial line was also removed this morning.
We still have NGT and all the others but that's ok! He is able to speak softly and it is soooooo good to hear his voice.

Blake has no recall of the past 10 days. He simply said, "Mom, I nearly died." He is very, very weak and it takes a tremendous amount of energy for him to speak so we're asked to limit all interaction with him. It's enough that he opens his eyes and sees us there.

Doctors have upgraded his condition to "serious" and have made it clear that we are not out of the woods...but, (we hope) the worst is now behind us. We do know that there are no plans to move him to the floor for several days.

Blake's nurse, Stacy, said it very well this morning when she told us, "We've made the tests and provided the medicine to your son...but we all know that God's hand over Blake is the reason he's alive this morning." We know that, too.

This blog continues to be a great source of comfort and strength to all of us here. Keep praying and praising God.

Love,
Helen

Blake:
You are the source of one of my favorite stories. I will never forget the time when we were going to the playoffs and you looked out the window and said "LOOK AT ALL THOSE DECAPITATED PEOPLE". Right after that you said "I'M SO GENIUS". You got your English skills from your Dad, but you got your stubbornness from you Mom--that stubborness and the Lord are the reasons you are still here with us. You have always been one of my "main men". Heal up and hair over!!!! See you soon(maybe in a Parking Garage). Mr. Jacque

Blake, what wonderful news from your Mom today. I know that God has surely been with you, along with BR, Helen and Jeff through all this. We are praying daily for you, trusting that God will continue healing and strengthening you so you can soon get back to living your life as God intended.
There are people all around the world who have had you in their hearts and prayers and even though you may never know many of them, your life and theirs have been touched because of the battle you have been in. Every one of us have been blessed as we have prayed for you during this time. God in heaven has surely heard your name lifted up to him in prayer thousands and thousands of times over the past few weeks and your progress toward complete healing has been because of those prayers. In the days, weeks and months come we will continue to pray for you and believe that God will hold you sheltered in his arms as you move forward with your life.
You have our love and prayers.

What a good day it was for me today. I woke up to find my son Blake off the vent and talking to me. Tonight I went to hear my son Jeff preach the word of God in Manderville. I truly have a blessed life, a wonderful wife and two great sons.

Thanks to each of you who have posted on this site. Today we read the blog to Blake and will read each days as new post come in.

Thank you for your concern and prayers. Blake is living proof that prayer matters. He is alive today because God answered yours and our prayers.

BLAKE UPDATE 11/20/06 9:20 a.m.

DAY 22-- IN HOSPITAL
DAY 11-- IN ICU

They removed the NGT this morning and plan to let Blake sip liquids as he can tolerate them today. He will start working with occupational therapist today, too.

Dr. Carsetti (his surgeon) told us he has no plans to move him from ICU for a few days.."maybe Friday, but we'll work at it so that maybe you can even have turkey on Thanksgiving!" They are now becoming concerned about the staff infection.

All told, we're grateful for today's developments. Blake is thrilled to have the NGT out of his nose!

Hey Blakester,
I'm so glad to hear that you are doing better. Mamma Cheryl, Eagle, Kenz, and Whit have been keeping me informed on how everything is going. I have been praying for you since the beginning of all of this, and it is so wonderful to hear that you are making progress. I truly believe in the power of prayer, and by the looks of your comments, you have many, many people praying for you.

I want to let you know how much it meant to see you walk through the door of my hospital room the day I had surgery. Although I was certainly loopy from the anesthesia, I can remember how happy I was to see you. That was such a trying time in my life, and it was so good to have the support of an old friend. Thank you. It is my turn to pay you a visit, which I plan on making soon. Until then, know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Mrs. Helen and Mr. BR, I continue to pray for the two of you as well. God is at work in this trying time. Know that better days are on the way.
Much love,
Tambry

BLAKE UPDATE 11/21/96 9:00 p.m.

DAY 23-- IN HOSPITAL
DAY 12-- ICU/TSU

Greetings from N.O. Blake has been moved to TSU (7th floor, room 81)..Transplant Step-down Unit (for transplant recipients and overflow for ICU transitionals; there are 30 transplant patients in this unit). He continues to show improvement.

He, B.R., and the physcial therapist took a 140' walk of the ICU halls this morning. With B.R. pushing the IV pole and carrying the chest pump, p.t. carrying catheter bag and holding onto Blake, Blake holding onto the walker..don't you know they made a pretty sight lined up across the hall?!? It took 10 minutes but they made it to the applause of the nurses, staff, and other patients' family members that we've gotten to know.

White blood count has climbed some which causes concern. Doctors are gradually removing tubes from Blake's body..they suspect this (these) may be the source of staph infection. Lab just pulled blood for more cultures. He still has the feeding tube, abdominal & chest drain tubes, etc.

He's hoping to be able to eat a little something tomorrow. Time will tell.

Helen (Blake's Mom)

So glad to hear that you were able to get up and about for a walk. I know that must have been tiring but at the same time rewarding. We are so proud of your fighting attitude and can't wait to see you.

By the way, I told Tate the other day that you were in the hospital and the doctors were taking care of you. He said, "Blake has a boo-boo?" I told him, "Actually, he a had a really big boo-boo". Tate replied, "Did they give him a band-aid? Hope it feels all better now." He thinks that a band-aid can fix anything!

Hang in there and please know that we are praying for your recovery.

Happy Thanksgiving to you, Jeff, Helen and B.R.!!

Blake,
I am so glad that you are doing better. I have been keeping up with your progress through Jeff. It was so odd that I was headed to N.O. last week. I was so glad that I was going that direction because I did not even know that you were sick until I got the phone call on that Friday. When I saw you Sunday I was really surprised and happy that you recognized me. I have not seen you in such a long time I didn't know if you would remember what I looked like, but I guess you did!I have been praying for you everyday; when I wake up, when I'm driving down the road, when I pray at night, at church, etc. You are on the prayer list at our church also. I know that the Lord is going to heal your body. I was so sick last year and had to have all that surgery on my brain. I just knew that I was never going to get over it, but I continued to rely on the Lord and he gave me strength.I know that you can beat this. I can't wait to see you again. I'm ready to catch up on old times. Some of my very best memories of my high school years are (with you) Blake.
I have always thought of you as one of my very closest friends. I know that since we graduated we have not seen each other much, but I think of you often. Well, I better let you go. I will check back with you later.

BLAKE UPDATE

DAY 24-- IN HOSPITAL
DAY 14-- TSU/ICU

This day was consumed by rest, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and respiratory therapy. Blake is now down to the 'wound abdominal pump' and the IV. All the other drains, tubes, etc. have been removed and he now has freedom of movement..although he is very, very weak.

He has eaten a little solid food today and has been sipping Gatorade throughout the day. Doctors are discussing 'closing the wound' and may do that in a few days.

While he has little to no recall of the last 12 days, he read some of this blog today and is beginning to understand what's been going on. Dr. Carsetti asked him last night, "Blake, do you remember what all we've talked about and did?" He did not know, so the doctor very patiently explained the 2nd surgery to him.

What a wonderful surprise Derek B. and Jared R.'s visit was today. Blake has such loving and caring friends...all of you!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU...
and, to my wonderful family...Glenda, Jeanne, Jen and the in-laws, aunts, uncles, and cousins...B.R. and I are eternally grateful for your support and prayers that have sustained us over the past 24 days.

Helen (Blake's Mom)

BR, Helen, Jeff and Blake, as we sit down to eat Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow we will certainly have so many things to be thankful for. One the greatest though, will be the thankfulness for the many prayers that have been prayed and answered for Blake and all of you during these past few weeks. I'm praying also that Blake will get to eat at least a little turkey and maybe some other of the holiday treats.
We love you and will continue to pray for all of you and look forward to the day we hear that Blake is out of the hospital and you are all back at home.

BTW, today was our 32 wedding anniversary. What a wonderful 32 years it has been.

We send our love to all of you!!

Update: day 25 in hospital
Thursday the 23rd-THANKSGIVING

What a wonderful Thanksgiving we had today. Blake was up and dressed in a jogging suit. Uncle Jimmy was first over to see him at the hospital this morning.

For lunch we (Jimmy, Jeanne and Jay Muslow/ Aunt Jennifer Futch, Ruth, Jeff, Alicia, Helen and I) went to the Intercontinental Hotel for a Thanksgiving brunch. This was the first time we really were able to go and enjoy ourselves, knowing that Blake was doing good.

When we returned, Blake joined us in the visitors lounge for about one and a half hours. Blake has made tremendous strides in the last few days.

This was for me the best Thanksgiving I have ever had. It really made me appreciate and thankful for what sometimes we take for granted.

A word of advise. Never take a day for granted. Be sure you tell those you love what they mean to you. Above all, thank God for all the blessing he has provided for you.

I thank God for answering prayers for Blakes healing. I also thank God for Jeff,
a solid rock in tuff times.

I thank each of you for caring and praying for Blake and my family.

B. R.

Dear Blake, Jeff, Helen and Br,
How great it was to read today's blog!!! Blake really is a miracle. What a testimony he will have to share to all!!! God grants miracles everyday. How wonderful to witness one!!! The experience you have all been through reminds me of one of my daddy's remarks---"Everything always works out for those who rely upon the Lord." Then he usually follows it with "Now I'm only 85 and maybe one day something won't work out, but for 85 years--everything has!!" It is so wonderful that you all had a great Thanksgiving. We will continue to pray for ALL of you.
